JoST·Journal of Systems Thinking

Sustainable Development Goals

JoST and the SDGs.

The Journal of Systems Thinking has signed the SDG Publishers Compact. Its focus is SDG 4, Quality Education.

The SDG Publishers Compact

The SDG Publishers Compact is a United Nations initiative, run with the International Publishers Association. Publishers who sign it commit to supporting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that the UN adopted in 2015 for the year 2030.

The Academy of Systems Thinking, which publishes the Journal of Systems Thinking (JoST), signed the Compact in November 2026.

JoST's focus: Quality Education

JoST focuses on SDG 4, Quality Education: ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Systems thinking is a way of understanding how ideas, people and problems connect. Teaching it well, from primary school to professional training, is central to JoST's work.

How JoST supports SDG 4

  • Free to read and free to publish. JoST is a diamond open-access journal. There are no subscriptions, paywalls or author fees, so cost keeps no reader or author out.
  • Free to share for teaching. Papers are licensed CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so teachers and students may copy and share them for non-commercial use, with credit.
  • Research on teaching and learning. JoST publishes research on how systems thinking is taught and learned, including in schools.
  • Open peer review. Reviews are public and signed, so readers can see how the research was judged and learn from the discussion.

Commitments

As a signatory, JoST commits to:

  • Encouraging and publishing research related to quality education.
  • Naming a contact person to lead its SDG work.
  • Promoting the SDGs to its authors, reviewers and readers.
  • Reporting on its progress each year.

Progress reports will be posted on this page.
